Health and care provider Bupa's launch of its new sustainable uniform concept in 2022 revealed a more contemporary look and feel to its range. By introducing colour, fresh styles, and new fabrics, it now has a range of products that staff love to wear and residents find more welcoming.

And the changes haven't stopped. Tania Killeen-Noy, New Zealand Procurement Manager, was keen to drive more sustainability into the range by introducing Repreve© recycled polyester to the nurse's and carer's tunics.

After a successful wearer trial to ensure garments maintained their comfort and performance, Bupa has gone ahead with its first order for nursing and carer tunics using Repreve©. The new tunics were rolled out in 2023.

Repreve© is a branded recycled polyester which uses plastic waste such as plastic bottles to make polyester fibre. As well as diverting plastic from landfills, the conversion process uses less water and energy compared to traditional petroleum-based virgin polyester.

More and more of our customers are looking for sustainable uniform options.

We are more than willing to support them on their journey.

We're excited to partner with New World, which have been wearing our ever-popular soft-shell jacket in recycled polyester.

"Whilst we laboratory test our fabrics, it's an important part of the development process to test products in-market as well. Moving to sustainable fabrics is the obvious choice and aligns with our goal of no virgin polyester by 2028, but we also need to make sure garments retain their performance. We knew our biggest single user of soft-shell products, New World, would put these garments through their paces."
Laura Heraud, Deane's Head of Research and Development.

That's over 20,000 garments every year converted into recycled polyester!

After extensive trials across Australia and New Zealand to test wearer comfort and fabric performance, Alsco is set to launch a sustainable uniform this year.

The capsule range will include a polo shirt, a sleeveless polo and a soft-shell jacket, all made from 100% recycled polyester and supplied to Alsco and Fresh & Clean service teams.

"We have sustainability targets in all areas of our business so it made sense to see how we could incorporate sustainability into our uniform."
Monique Welsh, Divisional GM Alsco Australia.
