Changing how we get rid of obsolete uniforms for a more sustainable future

29/02/2024

In an era where sustainability has become a pivotal concern, companies are increasingly recognising the importance of responsible waste management. One aspect often overlooked is the disposal of uniforms. Traditionally, discarded uniforms find their way into landfills, contributing to environmental degradation. However, Deane Apparel is taking steps towards change, implementing practices to divert 100% of obsolete uniforms from landfills and reduce our ecological footprint.

Firstly, Deane believes in the power of giving back. By strategically partnering with local charities and non-profit organisations, the company ensures that obsolete uniforms find a second life where they are needed most. This not only supports communities but also reflects Deane's commitment to social responsibility.

Secondly, to break the cycle of uniform disposal contributing to landfill waste, we have established partnerships with textile recycling facilities such as Upparel.

Upparel sort and grade each garment to identify a suitable recovery channel such as reuse, repurpose, or recycle. The most common outcome is to turn textiles into their revolutionary material, UpTex. Which can be used for packaging, signage, homewares, and more!

In 2023, Deane Apparel diverted over 14,000 kgs worth of garments from landfill, which equates to approximately 25,000kg of greenhouse gases prevented.

In a world grappling with environmental challenges, every effort to reduce waste and promote sustainability counts. By diverting uniforms from landfills through donation, recycling and upcycling, Deane Apparel is taking a proactive stance in minimising its ecological footprint. We hope that our initiatives inspire others to rethink their approaches to uniform disposal, fostering a collective commitment to a more sustainable future.

Together, we can make a difference and contribute to a world where responsible waste management is the norm rather than the exception.
