Consider these 3 things to buy more ethically…
In today's globalized economy, the textile industry is one of the most significant sectors, both in terms of economic impact and the scale of human involvement.
An ethical supply chain in the textile industry is more than just a buzzword; it represents a commitment to fairness, transparency, sustainability, and respect for human rights throughout the entire production process.
What is an Ethical Supply Chain?
An ethical supply chain is one in which all practices—from sourcing raw materials to manufacturing and distribution—are conducted in a way that is morally right and sustainable.
For the textile industry, this means addressing issues such as:
- child labour
- unsafe working conditions
- unfair wages and,
- environmental degradation
Here are 3 things to consider before you buy:
1. Do some research
Look for information on the brand’s website about their supply chain, labour practices, and environmental policies. Brands that regularly audit their supply chains to ensure people are properly treated should publish this. Take the time to look at what audits or standards the brand has in place to guarantee that people and environment have been considered.
2. Think about Environmental Impact
Look for products made from sustainable materials, such as organic cotton or recycled materials. Think about product's lifecycle – how long it will last, and can it be recycled or composted at the end of its life? Choose products with minimal packaging and think about how far they’ve travelled to get to you.
3. Look at the Price
If it seems too good to be true when you compare the product and the speed it’s going to be delivered to you, then you can assume some corners have probably been cut. Were the people who made this product paid fairly? Did they work in a safe and healthy factory? Where were the materials sourced from? Price tells you a lot. Listen to what it’s telling you!
